Saarland - Pleasure Region

A minute ago there was a "hello!" and already it sounds "Bonjour!". The border hopping between Germany and France makes motorcycling in Saarland a special pleasure. Together with its European neighbours, the smallest federal state is therefore still a real insider tip for bikers.

Sometimes fields and orchards alternate in a river meadow, sometimes dark spruce forests and small villages in a low mountain range landscape, sometimes testimonies of industrial culture dominate the landscape, sometimes you are in Saarland, sometimes in Lorraine or Alsace: the region impresses bikers with its lush nature, motorbike-friendly country roads and European flair.

The Saarland lies in the west of Germany and borders in the north and east on Rhineland-Palatinate, in the south and west on France and with its westernmost point on Luxembourg.

The best time to travel is from April to October.

The maximum speed is 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h outside urban areas and 130 km/h on motorways.

Motorcyclists are not required to carry warning vests and first aid kits.

In France, the maximum speed is 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h outside urban areas and 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h in wet conditions. Most motorways are subject to tolls. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5, for beginners 0.2. Motorcyclists and passengers must wear CE-certified gloves and a safety vest.

Many farmers, producers and catering businesses have joined forces in the network "Genuss Region Saarland", recognisable by a common logo. Here you can expect regional products of the best quality. Traditional dishes include "Gefillde" (filled potato dumplings with sauerkraut and bacon), "Dibbelabbes" (potato dish with dried meat and leek) or a "Lyoner-Pfanne" (sausage with potatoes, onions, fried egg). It is also worth visiting a farm shop where you can buy various oils, sausages, cheese and brandies. And not to forget the popular and versatile apple wine Viez.
